The process is easy, and you do not need the expertise to come up with one. You can do this during your free time especially on weekends and holidays, and the best part is that you do not have to spend a day to make a kite. Here are the steps to follow.

Collect the materials

Everything you need is readily available, and you can get them without having to spend a coin on them. They include;

· A heavy duty plastic bag mostly you should go for the types designed for the rubbish collection

· A roll of electric tape – Try and choose one that goes well with the color of the plastic bag

· A ribbon

· Straws (Here you may choose to use sticks or Fiberglass tube)

· Twine

· A marker pen

· A ruler

Sketch the kite

You have to sketch if you want to come up with beautiful kites. Lay your plastic bag on a smooth flat surface and in a portrait orientation. It should have an opening at the bottom. Mark the bag with dots. One dot should be on the top-most left corner, another one on the left edge (measure 100 cm from the first dot) and the other one should be about two cm from the top dot and 50cm from the left edge.

Use your ruler and draw a straight line from the first dot to the 3rd dot and then back across to the second dot. Ensure that the combination forms an uneven kind of triangle. Flip your plastic bag and then trace the lines on the reverse side to make a similar triangle shape.

Cut along the top left-hand edge of the layout and open it to form a kind of large flat sheet. By now you should have a diamond shape. Use your scissors to cut out the diamond but do not throw the rest of the parts away.

Make the kite structure

Measure and locate the middle of the crosspiece, marking with a pencil. The markings should form right angles. Take your dowel sticks and cut them in the size of your diamond shape. Cut them and lay them in the center of the kite shape from the top to the bottom of the diamond. Saw them or make notches and ensure that they are the exact size of the kite. Cut an about 5cm piece of tape and use it to attach each end of the dowels to the plastic bag. When taping, ensure that you do it along the length of the stick and fold the tape over at the top and bottom to ensure it is firmly secured.

Attach the line

Take your scissors or any sharp object and use it to poke a tiny hole on the plastic where the two sticks cross. Use the ribbon to thread it on one end of your line through the hole and tie it firmly to both sides of the sticks. Add some tape over the knot to secure it more firmly.

Making the bridle

In this step, you have to ensure that you can comfortably handle and fly the kite. Make a length of the twine and feed the bridle through the hole at the top. Tie it to the spine using a small piece of wood or board. Do the sane to the other end of the string on the other hole. It should be long enough so that when you pick up your kite, it is at least 8'' from the surface of the kite. This makes it easier to fly.

Attach the string

Now it is time to attach your string to the bridle. You can choose where you wish to attach it based on the angle of flying a kite. This may need several trials and experiment before settling on the final spot. The best way is if you start at a point near the top of the kite and change positions going downwards. The length of the string should be approximately 4'' to the bottom end of the kite's spine as a tail. Also, make the tail around 5cm wide and twice the length of the kite. Add ribbons at regular intervals to make the kite more appealing and have a look of creativity. Here you can use the plastic bag leftovers. You may tape the pieces together and use a second bag if you feel that the leftover pieces are not enough.

Ready to fly

You can now look for wind and enjoy flying your kit. Kites are best flown on strong windy days, days when you see leaves rustling. Do not forget to carry tape, scissors, and a string even as you head out to fly your kite. This is to make sure that if anything goes wrong, you are still covered and you can make any adjustments you may need.
